Organizations Invited to Participate

Today we reached out to a wide variety of maritime and historical organizations to invite them to participate in the planning process as we move forward.  By following the link below you can learn more about the organizations we contacted and read our invitation for them to participate. In the near future we will be reaching out buisiness and community groups to engage them and their constituent members in the master planning process.

If you are part of an organization that would like to get involved, or you know of an organization that should be invovled please contact Matthew Stubbs our community involvment specialist at matthew_stubbs@loudmonks.com

If you would like to read the text of the invitation please continue reading.
Dear Community Member:

This is an exciting time of opportunity for us at South Lake Union, and we at CWB would like to join with you to help shape our future.

Seattle Parks and Recreation with support of the Seattle Parks Foundation is moving forward with its fundraising for, and implementation of, its final design for Lake Union Park.  While this physical design has been finalized, we would like to invite you to take part in planning how we can share our city's Maritime Heritage in this vibrant new space.

In particular, in 2006 The Center for Wooden Boats was awarded a grant from the Department of Transportation’s Enhancement Program, to develop an Exhibits and Interpretation Plan. This plan will be the basis for telling the stories of Seattle’s Maritime Heritage (past, present and future), most notably within and around Lake Union Park.

The Interpretation Plan will create fascinating and engaging ways to reveal new insights and better understanding of our Maritime Heritage, so that our visitors and our community will better understand and appreciate Seattle's long history on Lake Union, and the meaning that history has for us.

As an early step we have launched a collaborative effort that we would like to invite you and your organization to join in over the coming months to strengthen our community and pool our resources. As one of our sailing instructors, Duncan Hollomon, has eloquently stated: “The Center for Wooden Boats isn’t just the boats: it’s the community of people who gather here, who work on the boats, and learn to sail on them, and pass along their knowledge of traditional maritime skills. We are like a village, and a village isn’t only a physical place, it’s a feeling, and it’s people. As I see it, we’re helping to build another, larger, more complicated kind of village, one with South Lake Union and maritime history as its thematic center, that bonds and links us together.”

We are looking to tap the energy that flows from the many organizations actively engaged in life and business on Lake Union. For this reason we invite you to please consider joining in our planning efforts.

How can you join this effort?

We are looking for individuals and organizations to collaborate with us in generating ideas, and to give input and assistance as our plans progress. In the future we will be hosting lectures, roundtable discussions, brownbag lunch presentations, brainstorm sessions, public meetings, and will be developing internship and volunteer opportunities.
In the meantime we will be seeking your histories, stories, thoughts, suggestions, opinions, idealistic visions, and even your concerns or fears. We want to learn more about what aspects of Lake Union's maritime history really matter to you.

Initially we are looking for input and answers to questions, to help shape how we might best facilitate our planning process. We want to ensure that you or your organizations’ talents and interests are used to the best advantage, and that the collective voices of our community of neighbors, boaters, and other interested individuals are heard.

To start the ball rolling, we have developed a short survey, which can be accessed via the web by selecting the blue survey button or, if you prefer, we will happily mail it to you. Please take the time to fill it out. It will take about 5 minutes.
